Workshop

Esther Rantzen visited Rums Eg on Saturday, 29th March.

She came to officially open the new Education & Community Suite on the second floor (Leckford Art Studio and Longstock Meeting Room) partly funded by the generous donation of £10,000 from Waitrose Community Matters Fund. The spaces are already getting some great use by various groups and of course own Spring programme of art and craft workshops are happening now through until June.

A papercutting workshop was held in the Leckford Art Studio
immediately after the opening ceremony by Esther Rantzen. A
total of 11 teenagers, including some from Romsey Young Carers,
produced some superb papercut Mothers' Day cards and decorations under
the tutorage of Kat Hansford.

Esther was presented with fresh flowers and stayed all morning. She enjoyed tea and toasted teacakes and a chat in Rum's Cafe and we sent her off with gluten free cake samples for her daughter, plus three pieces of artwork she bought in gallery. She wrote in our visitors book:

Congratulations! What an asset for Romsey to have this fabulous art and education community centre! I'll be back!

'Romsey War Horse' Bronze resin Maquette

Bell Street gallery, Rum’s Eg are delighted to announce that War Horse will be returning to the gallery by popular demand.

Rum’s Eg had previously exhibited a thought provoking maquette of a First World War soldier and his horse earlier this Summer, when plans were revealed for a War Horse statue to be erected on Romsey War Memorial Park.

The statue is to commemorate the Pauncefoot Hill Remount Camp and the Remount Service where thousands of horses and mules passed through to Romsey to prepare for war.

Talented sculptor and creator of the War Horse maquette, Amy Goodman of Quarley, is to undertake the poignant statue project which displays the unbreakable bond shared as they dealt with the horrors of the First World War.

As an Associate member of the Society of Equestrian Artists, Amy has spoken of her enthusiasm to participate:

“as long as I can remember I have drawn and sculpted animals, particularly horses. The character and movement of the subject matter are very important to me - a few strokes of paint or a few lines of steel can say so much.”

The maquette was created as part of a public consultation service for the War Horse project and will show the planned position of the final sculpture.

‘We had a wonderful evening and it was a great opportunity for two Romsey companies to work together to produce such a mutually beneficial event. The proceeds will go towards the final equipping of our 'Education Suite'.

The 2nd floor suite, consisting of the Leckford Art Studio, Longstock Meeting Room, office and toilet have been largely paid for by Waitrose Community Matters Fund (£10,000) and Hampshire County Council Community Building Fund (£12,500) plus some new Artist and local Patrons who have loaned or donated money.

A total close to £100,000 has now been raised to do everything and complete all three floors - except the lift extension and that is for our next funding round, for Phase 3! The second floor spaces will be ready for full use early in 2014 with the opportunity for local community groups and businesses to use these spaces.'

'The Snowmelt Chandelier' was installed in Rum's Eg gallery on Monday 7th October. It is made of upcycled plastic bottles, drinks cans and water pipes, and each section is lit by an LED light.

Innovative artist, Trudi Lloyd Williams, from Lymington revealed that inspiration for the chandelier comes from her fascination with rivers and her commitment to championing environmental responsibility. She says:

"The Snowmelt Chandelier focuses on our thirst for bottled water, the creation of millions of plastic bottles, their disposal and their global effect. Sea levels are rising, and glacial melts are increasing hence the name 'snowmelt'."

The Snowmelt Chandelier is available for sale from Rum's Eg gallery.

In the meantime, it makes a striking and addition to the Rum's Eg collection and is on display for all our visitors to enjoy.Rum's Eghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16918198135505154496noreply@blogger.com0
